My Experience At The Omaha Airport - 973 Words

It was a freezing day in Omaha, Nebraska. I sat in a chair overlooking the blizzard clad window of my studio apartment. After coming to Omaha just a few weeks ago, I had been through a horrific car accident, narrowly missing any injury. Earlier, I had been stranded at the Omaha airport due to another blizzard. I had to walk to the nearest bus stop, with all my bags, during a snowstorm. Having lived in the tropical Mumbai and then the humid, subtropical Raleigh, North Carolina, the frigid Omaha wind chilled my bones and my resolve. As I looked through the window, reflecting on myself and my career, my first thoughts were of my parents’. I am the only child of my highly educated parents. They were worried and wanted me to return to India. It was tempting to quit. But I asked myself: â€Å"Why am I here and what am I trying to achieve?† The years of my childhood rolled by. I was reminded of Saidu and Rohan. Saidu lived in a small shack near our home and did odd jobs for us. His family, poor and uneducated, lived in a village far away. He had come to Mumbai by himself to make a living. He worked at ten different homes every day and burned the midnight oil to finish high school. Rohan was one of my neighborhood friends. He was in high school when he lost his parents. Although he finished high school, he had to work part-time to support his undergraduate education.
